Education

Integrated Inquiry

Our engagement options have two main goals: to capture the spirit of the Mālama Manō Project expedition and to plan multiple ways for educators, students, and the general public to join the journey.

Educational Activities

The Mālama Manō Project puts ancestral knowledge at the center of inquiry, striving to integrate Indigenous ways of knowing into our research methods for understanding shark diversity and abundance.  One of the first places for the team to begin is to read the Hawaiian creation chant, the Kumulipo. We understand from the Kumulipo it is our kuleana (responsibility) as researchers to preserve and protect all parts of the ecosystem because we are all relatives having developed from the same primordial beginnings.  Not only is this culturally significant, but it is also scientifically consistent with our understanding of the formation of life on Earth.  Our educational activities on integrated science inquiry, biomimicry, and technology will encourage participants to seek out indigenous knowledge as a foundational component of exploration.

Where do I start?

Classrooms are encouraged to fill out the interest form to get connected with the project team and to explore levels of engagement, from accessing expedition-inspired activities to Ship to Shore and Nautilus Live broadcasts or joining a cohort.

Join the Journey

Join us on an integrated research journey in the Hawaiian Islands, assessing shark and elasmobranch abundance and diversity.

Ship to Shore

Topics available will depend a bit on our itinerary and classroom needs and interests. The following list are just a few ideas of how we can connect with your classroom.

Integrated Inquiry

Learn how scientists on board are considering perspectives and ways of knowing into research practices.

Conservation Technologies

Explore the role of technology in conservation through our technologies on board: Artificial intelligence, eDNA, BRUVs and drones.

To have a Ship to Shore classroom experience with our expedition team, select the dates September 15th 2022 to October 8th 2022 on the sign up below

Nautilus Live

We are hoping to cover the following topics, however, they are subject to change.  For the latest updates, please view our expedition page on the Nautilus Live website

Hawaii’s Sharks 101 & Intro to AI

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH,
8:00 AM HST (1:00 PM CST)

Team members both on the ship and at shore demonstrate how we are learning about sharks using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze video from our BRUV devices to learn about sharks.  You’ll also learn how to help us out from shore as a citizen scientist.

Inspired by Nature: How sharks and marine mammals are inspiring the engineering of the future

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH
8:00 AM HST (1:00 PM CST)

Nature is the true master of design.  In this panel discussion, we speak with scientists, engineers and Hawaiian experts on the lessons we are learning and have yet to learn from nature’s designs to inspire the engineering of the future.

Expeditions of the Future

TUESDAY, October 6TH,
8:00 AM HST (1:00 PM CST)

Scientific expeditions of today and reimagining those to come. Follow along in a panel discussion while explorers deconstruct expeditions of the past and reconstruct expeditions of the future

TOPICS FEATURED ON NAUTILUS LIVE ARE FLEXIBLE AND IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER PROJECTS.  WE WILL ALSO INCLUDE FEATURES OF THE TECHNOLOGIES ON BOARD AND MUCH MORE!

Connect

Network of Educators

We want to support you as you adventure with us.  Join a cohort of teachers on What's App for a direct line to scientists on board the ship, and to share ideas with each other before, during, and after the expedition.
